Air Mattress for Bedridden Patients: How It Helps

When someone spends most of the day in bed, constant pressure on the same spots can damage the skin. An anti-decubitus air mattress, also called an anti-bedsore air mattress, is one of the tools families use at home to help relieve that pressure. At Zain Surgicals, Karachi, the anti-decubitus air mattress costs Rs 6,000.

What is a pressure sore?

A pressure sore (bedsore or pressure ulcer) is damage to the skin and tissue caused by long pressure, usually over bony areas like the hips, back, heels and elbows. The NHS guide to pressure ulcers explains the signs and who is at risk.

How an alternating air mattress works

The mattress has rows of air cells connected to a small electric pump. The pump inflates and deflates alternate cells every few minutes, so the parts of the body taking pressure keep changing.

Who uses one

Patients who spend most of the day in bed or in one position, for example after a stroke, major surgery, or in old age with limited movement.

Setting it up at home

  • Lay it on top of the existing mattress of a hospital bed or home bed, with the tubes at the foot end. Both our hospital beds already come with a mattress, so the air mattress goes on top of it.
  • Connect the pump, hang it on the bed frame, and switch on. It takes some time to inflate fully.
  • Use a thin cotton sheet on top, and avoid thick layers that block the effect.

Care alongside the mattress

An air mattress helps relieve pressure but does not replace regular care. Ask your doctor or nurse about turning schedules, skin checks and nutrition.
